I date a guy who read my favorite thriller/mystery and commented (his only comment) that he could tell it was written by a woman. Annoyed by what I perceived as gender bias, I failed to ask him what he meant, but I suspect some people will guess that Gina M. Barlean's new book, Recipes for Revenge: a Four-Course Novel, was also written by a woman. I suspect as well, that women will love it--and so will men who love women.I don't know whether to call it dark, as Gina does, or hilarious. It is true that people die; it is also true that their deaths are semi-accidental, even though the dead, men in all cases, have mistreated their women. I was particularly taken with the idea that food, so essential to our existence and such a strong glue for holding us together ("Let Us Break Bread Together On Our Knees"), could also be an agent of meting out consequences.
Barlean has created some uppity women who won't take any guff, even if it means standing up to a man when you're absolutely terrified. In this series of stories, she addresses real-world violence against women and girls in its many forms, including the office staple of devaluing and misusing them, adult men sexually abusing little girls, date rape and domestic abuse and even stalking. But instead of giving in or becoming depressed, her women get even. Who wouldn't like to see abusers suffer the logical consequences of their behavior?
If I have a reservation about this book, it would be that the devil gives up too easily. I expected him to be tougher - but maybe that's for the next novel.

OK, seriously, the characters were amazing. I rooted for the gals to give the guys what they had coming. The plots were twisted and what I thought would happen, didn't. Oh, the potato salad! *shiver*
Speaking of food, there are recipes at the beginning of each section! I'm definitely trying the cookie recipe with the kids. Rice Crispies in cookies? Yes, please! Why didn't I think of that?
This is a good read for anyone that likes suspense, murder and drama. As a bonus, you get ideas for your next meal ... if you can stomach it! )
I found this author during a moment of curiosity seeing something she'd posted on a writer's forum. I'm glad I gave in to my nosy nature because I love the style of writing she uses! With her latest release, you will indulge yourself in just the right combination of sass, suspense and just desserts while immersing yourself in 'Recipes for Revenge'. The novel is broken into a series of four thrilling short stories, making it the perfect solution for those who want to get to the good stuff without reading 400 pages in one stretch. Would I recommend this book to my friends? Yes--and I have!
Rarely do I write a negative review. I believe every author out there has potential and I don't want to be the reviewer that makes an author throw in the towel and stop writing. (Like I would seriously have that power...). However, since I downloaded this book because of the all the positive reviews I felt the need to say something. I should also add it was a fee download so now I feel really awkward.
Pros this book has the fewest errors of any free download I have received from . That was interesting. I now know it IS possible to get a fee download that isn't full of typos and grammatical errors.
Cons I found the book flat. It reminded me of fiction you find in women's magazines only much longer. The characters and setting never came to life in my mind. I found myself reading to the end not to discover how it turned out but more from a sense of duty - so many liked this book. What was I missing? Maybe a surprise at the end? Nope, got to the end and that wasn't it. The only thing I came away with after reading this book adding rice crispies to my cookies and the sense that I really disliked each of the female characters and hated that there was a 5th chapter where I encountered them again.
I know I am in the minority, but wanted other readers to be aware that despite over a half dozen positive reviews this may not be their type of book. It was certainly not mine.
So yummy, I had to keep reading to the end to see what would happen. Loved the entire meal. So cool how she wrapped it all up. Absolutely delicious.
It was a really fun book to read,enjoyed each short story about revenge and the great recipes and the endings were really unexpected. I think anyone who enjoys a little mystery would really enjoy these book segments.
This was a quick, enjoyable read. It's very good for when you don't have a lot of time, as it reads like several short stories that don't have a common thread (until the very end). The first story with "Gloria" and the stuffed jalapenos was probably my favorite of them, although I also really enjoyed the one with the scary and abusive neighbour. So why 4 stars and not 5? I didn't care for the story with the character called "Chicky". I found her trite and irritating (in contrast to the other female characters, who I enjoyed hearing about much more). Something also tasted a bit off about the very last story. I would have thought it would have taken a bit more than that to run Damon off, and I would have enjoyed seeing that play out differently. Lastly, I think I would have found it satisfying had the ladies been a bit more purposeful about what they were doing. Still, worth your time, I think.
One story focuses on pedophiles, another is an abusive relationship.
Great novella's
This bundle of stand-alone novella's includes recipes. Some violence, no editing errors or drag-you-down drama.
Each storyline is different, no plug-and-play. Believable characters with distinct personalities and entertaining dialogue.
I may re-read this bundle and look forward to other works by this author.
