Lancelot is an outcast dog living and working at Les Chiens D’or, an exclusive kennels in New England. Nearby is Hades Chimneys, a horrific place that strikes terror into the hearts of all dogs and especially Lancey who managed to escape the Chimneys once, no thanks to Grimlock, a spiteful bull terrier.
One day, Lancey is packed off to New York with a glamorous new owner to take part in a mysterious experiment. Soon his life is in danger and he is once again at the mercy of his old adversary Grimlock.
Lancelot and The Return to Hades Chimneys The Lancelot Chronicles Book 1 eBook Mary Hosty
Lancelot is a cross between a Great Dane and an Anatolian Shepherd and given that an Anatolian Shepherd is just about as big as a Great Dane but heavier, he has to be quite the dog! But Lancey doesn't talk much about his appearance - he's ashamed of being a crossbred in a purebred world though he dearly loved his mother, who died horribly for her indiscretion, and his father, who raised him until his own death.Lancey lives in the country breeding kennel where he was born, taking care of purebred puppies and hanging out with his pal Frank, a Golden Retriever, until one fine day Sybil, who teaches poetry in New York City, decides to adopt him. Then the going gets rough.
Teens might be able to handle this beautifully written yarn with its well-meaning but often wishy-washy characters and its very evil wrongdoers, but it is definitely not the book for younger children.
Sybil has a life-threatening allergy and her hope is that Lancey can be trained to sniff out the allergen before she is threatened by it. Sybil's cook and caregiver, Mrs. Stopes, would prefer handle Sybil's protection sans dog or other assistance.
We learn of Lancey's training, failures, successes and tribulations, and are also party to his thoughts, since he is the narrator of the novel. Lancey relates how books convey the smells of their readers - their joys, sorrows, tears, and sometimes even the cataclysmic events occurring while the book was in their hands. He also gives his ideas on philosophy, religion, and most definitely, his credo on loyalty and what it should and often fails to mean to humans.
The book is often gut-wrenching and just as often uplifting. I recommend it for everyone age 13 and up, but especially for adults. They are the ones who need to be reminded....

Lancelot and The Return to Hades Chimneys The Lancelot Chronicles Book 1 eBook Mary Hosty Reviews
I've read Lancelot and The Return to Hades Chimneys about a year ago but the book is still fresh in my memory...
Loved it from the first to the last page.Easy read with a very intresting story line.
Looking at people and the world around us through dog's eyes was funny and surprising.Lancelot's love and loyalty for his friends was incredible and weirdly enough- admirable!
I'd recommend this book to everybody who can read or to whom this book could be read! Its as much for kids as for adults since we all can find some lesson in it!
No need to say "enjoy" beacuse im sure you will anyway!!!
What a cute, feel-good book. I downloaded Lancelot and The Return to Hades Chimneys just a few days ago and already, thanks to a long-haul flight, three generations of my family have read and loved it, though my Mom felt one or two scenes were not for the under tens. On the other hand, my son who is thirteen loved it and thought those very scenes made the book much more exciting.
I suppose what I enjoyed most about the book, apart from being a simply unputdownable story, were Lancey's insightful and amusing reflections on human beings and how we live our lives. Lancey is a brave and loyal hound, who has overcome tragedy and the added pain of being an outcast. The action quickly unfolds when he is picked for an important but secret assignment with a wealthy and beautiful professor in New York.
The characters in this book are very well drawn, especially the villains and I enjoyed the settings also the exclusive kennels in New England, the bleak and scary Hades Chimneys, the heavenly cottage on Cape Cod and of course New York - all seen from Lancey's unique perspective.
I won't spoil the plot but suffice to say I finished reading the book, wishing it had been longer.
Some quibbles I wanted to see more of some characters. And what is going on with that quirky cover?? It looks a bit homespun. I hope it is not mean to suggest the author must have spent buttons on the design !
But all in all I give Lancelot and The Return to Hades Chimneys full marks. I'm probably going to gift it as an e-stocking-filler to some friends this Christmas.
Novellist Mary Hosty is to be congratulated on a very successful venture into the world of childrens' fiction. In Lancelot and the Return to Hades Chimneys, she has created a story eminently suitable for a range of ages, from kids taking their first steps in the great adventure of reading right through to young teens and beyond.
Even as a mature adult I found myself gripped and drawn in as I followed the adventures of Lancey, the dog whose narrative voice and keen intelligence provide us with a constant and insightful commentary on the vagaries of the human species.
On these supposedly `superior' humans his fate ultimately rests, but I can reveal that all ends happily following an exciting and action packed dénoument.
I heartily recommend this book whatever the age of the reader.
I just finished this book and I am not embarassed to say that, at 27, I enjoyed it as much as I would have at 10! The plot is well paced and kept my attention at all points. Watching the characters develop through the unique perspective of a dog was also both refreshing and insightful.
The language, though rich is also fairly accessible as my Advanced English Class here in Beijing loved the chapter I assigned them to read. Confident readers should have no issues. My only concern would be that parents should perhaps read it before handing it to an under 12 (if the parents can put it down!).
In conclusion I feel this is a good, old fashioned yarn that appeals to all ages (in the same vein as Black Beauty, Treasure Island)and despite some very slightly mature themes for pre-teens, I would not hesitate to give this book 4/5 stars. A must for dog-lovers too )
